International Workshop “The Challenges of Citizenship Education in Europe”

“The most important thing an institution does
is not to prepare a student for a career but for a life as a citizen”

Frank Newman

On Thursday, October 21, 2021, as part of the activities of the Erasmus+ co-funded project ‘Policy implementation support and teacher empowerment for CITIZenship Education – CITIZED’, the international workshopThe challenges of Citizenship Education in Europe” will take place in Sanremo, Italy.

The event intends to bring together policy-makers, researchers, and education professionals from different European countries, aiming at sharing and discussing the first results of the research conducted within CITIZED, as well as its expected future developments. The workshop is also included in the calendar of activities of the international Education Inspiring Peace Laboratory (EIP Lab). The conference represents the 4th annual event organised at the EIP Lab, spin-off of the Erasmus+ funded project UPPER.

During the workshop, the first results of the project CITIZED will be presented alongside the five main challenges identified by the consortium:

  1. How to bring citizenship education into everybody’s agenda (policy makers, media, teachers, parents and students)?
  2. From good purposes to good implementation: what may go wrong in citizenship education policies and how to avoid it?
  3. National/European frameworks vs bottom-up initiatives (informal and non-formal learning): how do they match?
  4. Teachers’ trainings on citizenship education: from a focus on contents towards the development of skills, attitudes and values.
  5. Assessing students’ learning outcomes of citizenship education: how to do it in formal education?

The workshop will also focus on the identification of a set of competences, to be acquired by teachers interested in citizenship education to effectively help learners in their learning path for democratic citizenship. A first set of competences identified by the CITIZED partners will be thus presented, discussed and integrated through the inputs received from the participants.

The event will be held in English.
